For many decades in Australia we have been duped on our perception of Mexican cuisine. Typically we associate Mexican food with hard shell tacos, nachos and pre made old del paso sauces. This brand of ‘Tex-Mex’, however, is far from the actual authentic food cooked in Mexico.

At Fonda Mexico in Swan St, the aromas and flavours of the Mexican cuisine are brought directly to your plate in a setting inspired by the home style restaurants of Mexico City. Inspired by the street food they fell in love with while on a holiday in Mexico, two mates, Tim McDonald and Dave Youl set out to share that same experience with the people of Melbourne. In 2011, that vision became a reality, with the pair opening Fonda Mexican in Richmond.

A clear inspiration in mind and the expertise of their team of chefs in hand, the restaurant created a menu centred around traditional and authentic dishes bursting with scintillating Mexican flavours.

The tacos, served on the top of small corn tortillas (the traditional Mexican taco style) are filled with fresh local produce, sauces and condiments. Fonda Mexican offer 6 different delicious varieties, including a mouthwatering fish taco served with market fresh rockling and a pulled pork in guajillo chilli taco.

Head chef Mark Tagnipez and his team also infuse the flavours of Mexico with unique Australian produce, such is the case with their ‘Grilled Kangaroo Burrito’. Tagnipez is also currently on a research trip around Mexico to gather inspiration for even more innovative menu ideas.

The restaurant also features an extensive drinks list to complement the menu, including a long list of both local and Mexican beers, wines, cocktails and margaritas. With friendly staff and a homely decor, the restaurant has a down to earth and welcoming environment.
