Owned and operated by former Masterchef contestant Phillip Vakos,, Bahari – The Hellenic Palate is a restaurant serves some of the finest ‘Gringlish’ food in Melbourne. The term Gringlish refers to the unique mixture of traditional Greek cuisine infused with classic English flavours and cooking techniques.

Growing up in Tasmania, Vakos was surrounded by supreme chefs (his Cretan grandmothers) from an early age, soaking up knowledge of the subtleties of flavour and spice in the fine art of Greek food. Instilled into him as a youngster, Vakos’ grandmothers preached a mantra to ‘Keep it simple, but keep them guessing’, a motto that he continues to infill himself at Bahari today.

Upholding to its name (bahari being the Greek translation of spice) the dishes served are bursting with an elegant mix of traditional Greek flavours. From the classics to more modern creations, the restaurant covers all bases.

Excellent renditions of Greek staples such as ‘Saganaki’, ‘Char Grilled Octopus’ and ‘Slow Roasted Lamb Shoulder’ are ideal to share. sprinkled with elements of English flavours and spices, the dishes served here make Bahari that little bit unique amongst the wealth of Greek restaurants available in Melbourne.

In addition to a satisfying meal, customers are also offered a unique insight on the food preparation process from Vakos himself, who regularly runs ‘Master Class’ sessions inside the restaurant for all to see.

Another unique aspect of this restaurant is its bold strategy to maintain a rotating monthly (or even weekly) specials menu, featuring new and exciting dishes on a regular basis. Beyond eating in at Bahar, you can also order take away or utilise their catering service.

Bahari – The Hellenic Palate is located at 179 Swan St and is open 6 days a week (excluding Mondays) for lunch and dinner.
